From The Pyre is a major leap forward from what was already a strong debut.
I’ll admit, I wasn’t initially blown away by The Last Dinner Party’s debut, Prelude to Ecstasy, when it first came out, and my original review reflects that. However, over time, it grew on me. I still don’t think it’s a masterpiece or anything, but it’s a solid, enjoyable record from a promising band. From The Pyre, on the other hand, builds on that foundation in almost every way to create a genuinely incredible effort that makes me even more excited to see what they do next.
This album contains the punchiest and most intense material I’ve heard from The Last Dinner Party, with segments of certain songs being absolutely overwhelming in the best way. Tracks like Agnus Dei, Second Best, Rifle, The Scythe, and Inferno are absolutely incredible, and are easily the highlights for me on From The Pyre. There are so many moments across the tracklist that caught me completely off guard, like the gradual tempo shift during the buildup of Rifle or the explosive outro of Angus Dei. What shocks me the most is how developed and cohesive it all sounds, considering The Last Dinner Party formed just a few years back. It generally takes a few tries for a new band to work out all of the kinks and develop a unique sound, but they seem to have done it almost immediately.
That being said, not everything on From The Pyre lands for me. This Is the Killer Speaking was a relatively weak lead single, with a chorus that doesn’t really connect and a bridge that isn’t quite good enough to save the whole track. Sail Away is also another forgettable cut, just because of how directionless and uneventful it is in comparison to everything else the project has to offer. Still, From The Pyre is an incredible evolution from Prelude to Ecstasy, taking the best parts of that album and improving on them tenfold. The Last Dinner Party is already a group with a fully developed vision and sound, and that’s an extremely exciting place to be, especially only a few years after their formation.
